“Atoni: Hybridization Film and Sasando Orchestra” is an innovative multimedia production that combines film and live music performance. This unique project aims to recreate and reimagine stories inspired by the ethnomusicological collections of Jaap Kunst.
The production features a carefully crafted film that visually narrates aspects of Atoni culture, particularly focusing on the musical traditions of this ethnic group from the island of Timor in eastern Indonesia. Alongside the film screening, a live orchestra performs on the sasando, a traditional string instrument native to the region. This combination creates a immersive audiovisual experience that bridges past and present, tradition and innovation.
This production stands as a testament to the enduring influence of Jaap Kunst’s work and demonstrates how historical ethnomusicological materials can be creatively reinterpreted to remain relevant and captivating for today’s audiences. It also highlights the ongoing dialogue between traditional cultural expressions and modern artistic mediums, showcasing the dynamic nature of cultural preservation and evolution.
